All Saints Church

West Ham Summer Festival

Held for the first time in many years, the All Saints Church, West Ham, the week long Summer Festival saw the involvement of the Friends.

On Thursday 25 June, following the Friends AGM, Charlotte Evans led a group from the Church on a tour of West Ham Park. There is much to see at the moment with a lot of new planting and the Clare Newton's art exhibition.

On Saturday 27 June, Jim and Bob ran a Friends stall at the church fete and answered many questions about the local bird life and the work of the friends. Bob even managed to sell a few of his books! The weather was amazing and there were tours of the 15th century, 23 metre high tower, along with regular bell ringing demonstration. Jim took advantage of this rare opportunity and took photos.

The fete was a huge success with many stalls, and African drumming and dancing, followed by a brass band. The blazing sunshine was an added bonus and the Reverend Kirby, Jon Cullen and everyone else connected with the organisation of the Festival did a superb job. Here’s to next year.

At 23 metres above the ground it becomes obvious how well we are  served locally by trees.  This is all that can be seen of West Ham Park from the top of the church tower.

which leads straight away to........................

Newham Classic 10K Run

A new chapter was created in Newham’s sporting history on Sunday 19th April, as thousands flocked to Newham’s first 10k run and long awaited Sunday Fun Day.  More than 900 runners gathered at Theatre Square ready to take on the gruelling 10k route zigzagging around the Olympic Park, Stratford and Forest Gate.

To many runners the, all to brief, trip through West Ham Park provided a welcome relief from the roads.  Looking splendid in the morning sun, the Park welcomed the pack through the South Gate in The Portway, before heading up to Linden Gate.  Through the trees down to the Playground, the stream of athletes passed the 7k marker and left the Park heading up Upton Lane.

Superintendent Don puts a spurt on for the camera.....

........with only 3k to go, the number of sample bottles threaten to overwhelm the anti-drug testers .

But the cramps then set in.

25th July

The Friends were at Stratford Park

Lyndsay & Don

Saturday 25th July we helped Don and Sue on the stand at Stratford Park.

With our "What's in the Box Game" and "Guess the Bird Competition", along with a board displaying the Friends T-shirts and information, it was an opportunity to stand alongside our nearest neighbours.

The day's theme was environmental, to which we added our Open Spaces display and information on the food growing project, including leaflets & badges.
